Victims of Domestic Violence

If you are a victim of domestic violence and concerned about your rights as a tenant of a rental property, or a landlord renting to a victim of domestic violence, Arizona law provides early termination of a rental agreement by a tenant for domestic violence as long as certain criteria is met. The specific criteria can be found in the Arizona Revised Statute 33-1318 which covers early termination by a tenant for domestic violence; conditions; lock replacement; access refusal; treble damages; immunity. This information is also covered in the Arizona Residential and Landlord Tenant Act.

The Arizona Department of Housing does not regulate the Arizona Residential Landlord and Tenant Act or resolve landlord and tenant issues.

If you are seeking guidance concerning Arizona Residential Landlord and Tenant Act, you may wish to consult an attorney. Public members who are not represented by an attorney, may find it helpful to contact free community legal services by visiting the Community Legal Services website at www.clsaz.org.

If you or someone you care about is in a domestic violence situation, please call:

Arizona Coalition To End Sexual & Domestic Violence
Phone:  (602) 279-2900 or toll free: (800) 782-6400
FAX:     (602) 279-2980
TTY:     (800) 279-7270

The Arizona Coalition To End Sexual & Domestic Violence provides referrals and information via telephone but you may also visit their website.

If you are experiencing homelessness, or are at risk of facing homelessness, the Department provides a list of Homeless Assistance Agencies throughout the state on its website.

Many agencies provide safety, shelter, support, legal advocacy and information to victims of domestic violence and their children to help them transition from their violent situations into safe homes. Additional resources are listed under the Helpful Links on this page.

For those in search of other housing options, the Arizona Department of Housing partners with Socialserve.com, who provides a web-based, searchable database of affordable apartments in Arizona and other states.
