Valor on Eighth
On October 5th, a ground breaking ceremony was held for Valor on Eighth. A project that was funded under the General Pool in 2015 with Low Income Housing Tax Credits and will be developed by Gorman & Company, Inc. (one of the nation’s ‘Top 50 Affordable Housing Developers’) with the co-development partners of The ARM of Save the Family Foundation, one of the east valley’s largest homeless service providers.
The project is acquisition, demolition and new construction of 50 units (15 one-bedroom, 19 two-bedroom and 16 three-bedroom) with structured parking. Fifteen of these units are set aside for households with children. The majority of the units will be set aside for households with incomes ranging between 40 and 60 percent of the area median income. Five units will be market-rate units. The project is located at 1001 East 8th Street in Tempe, immediately east of the ASU campus and a stone’s throw from a Valley Metro Light Rail station. It is in close proximity to large parks and community facilities, is incredibly family friendly, located on a residential street that plays host to a comprehensive bike path system, is near Creamery Park and within walking distance to Tempe Town Lake.
There will be extensive supportive services targeting female veterans and veteran families with children. It is a unique opportunity to provide quality housing and supportive services for these families, currently a severely under-served segment of the Arizona population. Supportive services will include onsite before and after school care, computer training in a full-service computer lab, job training and search assistance, credit and financial counseling, as well as a parenting skills program, family violence prevention classes, crime prevention programs, landlord/tenant programs and wellness activities and including a Resident Services Coordinator a minimum of 40 hours per month.
Valor on Eighth will have ceiling fans, window coverings, washers and dryers, a large multi-purpose community room, a fitness facility, free wireless internet, a playground, a BBQ area and picnic area, along with a second floor hardscaped amenity deck overlooking the parking area. One hundred percent of the units are designed utilizing Universal Design principles for accessibility and all units will have their own private balcony space.
